Program Note
James Toback′s 1978 cult favorite Fingers provides the basis for Audiard′s latest film. In that film, Harvey Keitel played a man trapped in the world of the New York mafia who had aspirations to being a concert pianist. Audiard and co-writer Tonino Benacquista have updated and transplanted the action to modern-day Paris. Tom, played by Romain Duris, has the same ambition, but he′s condemned to likely following his father′s footsteps into the equally unethical and often illegal world of real estate. His life in property where he is surrounded by petty investors with questionable morals is constantly pushing into his world as a musician, to the point that he many not be able to resist it. Audiard positions Tom as a man in transition, at a crossroads in his life, struggling with the original film′s themes of duty, manhood, sacrifice and change. Not content to simply be a remake, Audiard and Benacquista take Tom into new territory as he matures in this affecting blend of character study and suspense thriller, set to a Silver Bear-winning score.
