Program Note
This film experimentally recreates the history of the Kurdish genocide in Iraq. In 1988, the Iraqi government killed 182,000 Kurds and buried them with ‘Operation Anfal’, an ethnic cleansing operation. Faraj managed to survive and returns to his hometown to try to resuscitate the victims and their hidden history. The devastating memories of the survivors are introduced with poignant interviews. The remaining families recall the forgotten victims with pictures and letters. In order to let the world know about their experience, they retrieve their painful memories and compress them to one phrase: ‘Remember Anfal’, and one action: delivering red apples to the families of victims. It is not hatred or revenge that they recall, but the tragic history of inhumane crime. The interviewees forgive and reconcile with the world by giving apples filled with memories for the victims. This film is the first feature documentary and posthumous work of Taha Karami, who passed away in May this year to our sorrow. (CHO Young-jung)
