Program Note
The film begins with stories about dreams. East Timor native Augustino remembers seeing his sick mother back home in his dream. Tarsila from Sri Lanka wakes up from dreaming about giving a tour of her homeland to Koreans. Phillip Gonzalez dreams of winning the Lotto and touring Korea. Thus the film captures the scenery of inner-space of immigrant workers in Korean society. Director Zhang Lu once again gives us his take on diaspora. The camera is silent while watching their drifting lives. Perhaps that’s why, unlike other films depicting immigrant workers, Scenery is able to look the 10 or so workers straight in the face, calling each by their individual names. And in the end, it makes us feel as though we are running their breathless races along with them. The camera starts running on the roads of Gangnam, and comes to a stop in a remote alley. Then it sinks to the ground, gasping for breath, and looks up into the sky, as though gazing at their homelands from Korea. (HONG Hyosook)
