Program Note
In a story about a distorted family that reflects the current crisis in Greece, Angeliki jumps to her death from her balcony on her 11th birthday. While the police and Social Services try to discover the reason for this apparent suicide, Angeliki’s family keeps insisting that it was an accident.
This year’s Silver Lion, Miss Violence shows off the talent of Greece’s new and emerging directors. It stands out in creativity and execution among other films that reflect the economic and moral crisis in Greece. The film starts with the opening of a door, and ends with the closing of the door. All along the film, the door is a symbolic prop, as well as an effect within the frame that represents the closed, rigid and divided family atmosphere. This rigidity is extremely contrasted with the flexibility of the 9-minute long take of the visit by two social workers. The horrible truth that causes the disintegration of the family identity itself pointedly indicates the seriousness of the crisis Greece now faces. (RHEE Soue-won)
