Twenty-year-old Kamal has been married for several months but has not yet been able to consummate the marriage; his wife remains a virgin, and he sexually frustrated. After consulting a physician and finding that there is nothing physically wrong, he travels to the city in search of another woman, and hopefully physically intimacy. But even though the city is teeming with women, he is unable to meet even one, that is, until a chance encounter on a bus. Kamals furlough is punctuated by unsuccessful attempts at flirtation and seduction, though his pursuit of a factory worker named Vera does lead him to her boudoir. However, on waking up in Vera′s apartment - did he or didn′t he? - Kamal discovers things have taken a turn for the worse. Soon he has fallen in with a band of criminals whose concerns are far more nefarious than his own. The film looks about the story of a man on a journey to restore his sexual potency. But it soon develops into something speaking volumes about the cultural shifts occurring in Central Asia. The director employed family members as his actors and giving them their lines at the same day as the shoot to maintain a fine balance between spontaneity and exactitude. (Production Notes)
