Program Note
After a 14-year separation, five friends reunite at the funeral of a favorite teacher from their hometown. Alex, Carmen, Nina, Nicole, and Brigitte - each in her early 30s - reopen old wounds and revive dormant friendships over the course of the night and the next day. Their remembrances and dreams for the future are explored in a stripped-down, unfussy narrative, giving full reign to the performances and character development. Barbara Albert`s slow build and measured creation of the personalities of the five women lends the film an element of suspense and tension that gives way as their stories are revealed, and their common history is examined. The film ends with each of the women embarking on a new chapter of her life, armed with a revised worldview to carry her. The underlying theme of paradise lost drives the film, however, and Albert deftly navigates the waters of generational expectations and disappointments.
