Program Note
Security guard Joe Yumba (an incredible Eriq Ebouaney) is a Congolese refugee whose life is on an upswing. He has won asylum in Ireland, and learns his family has been granted status as well. Things start to crumble when a vicious gang targets him to be the inside man on a bank heist. Director Gleeson goes deeper still, playing with genre conventions by calling Yumba`s identity into question when it`s clear he is a match for the gangsters. Wrapped inside the thriller`s narrative is a careful examination of the darker side of refugee life in Ireland, where Yumba and his family live an isolated life, with no one to trust and nowhere to turn in a time of need.
