Program Note
This is the film that completes a trilogy begun in [Drifting Clouds] and continued with [The Man Without a Past]. Rather than making the a series of connected films with clear cause and effect - unemployment leads to homelessness and then to loneliness - Aki Kaurismaki focuses on a man, Koistinen, so desperate for love and connection that he allows himself to be taken advantage of with disastrous results. Known for his deadpan, offbeat sense of humor, Kaurismaki`s latest departs from his characteristic absurdist narrative. Ostensibly about a dupe and a femme fatale, [Lights in the Dusk] is immersed in emotional and cinematic minimalism, with limited sets and locations that convey Koistinen`s isolation and loneliness, as does almost every single shot.
