Program Note
Zingarina comes to Transylvania with her friend Marie to find her lover, who is also the father of her unborn child. Wandering the streets of wine, music and dance during a village festival, she finally meets him, but he rejects her. Going into an emotional meltdown, she disappears with a gypsy, leaving Marie behind to worry. Isolated from the outer world and left alone in a strange land, she meets a guy named Tchangalo. When she takes a journey in Transylvania with him, she gradually becomes a gypsy. As with its title, [Transylvania], the film clearly shows Tony Gatlif`s attachment to the nomadic life gypsies, revealed in his previous gypsy films, [Swing] and [Exiles]. The bohemian lifestyle is mirrored in the film`s beginning with groovy tunes, which is contrasted with the tough journey that covers most of the film. The last scene sheds light on the speculations of life conveyed by story of the two whose relationship goes beyond any ordinary one. (Rhee Soue-Won)
