Program Note
This is Thailand`s first 3D feature animation. Even though this animation appears to have been heavily influenced by both Hollywood and Japanese animation, it met with a roar of approval from its own citizens for its story based on Thai history and cultural pride. The film is also notable for trying to integrate advanced animation techniques into its own culture. When baby elephant Khan Kluay sets out to find his father, he gets separated from his mother. He grows up to become a strong elephant warrior in Thailand`s glorious king Narusewan`s army. He defeats Nuang Daeng, the elephant warrior of Hongsawadee`s army, who killed his father. The first part of the film resembles the fairy tale Leo the Lion. However, the second part, where the director merges Khan Kluay`s story with real historical events and figures, takes on an entirely different character. The magnificent battle scenes in particular demonstrate the latent energy of Thai animation that one cannot experience elsewhere. (Kim Ji-seok)
