Program Note
Melanie is a teenaged girl dreaming of being a pianist. She takes piano lessons with the help of her hard-working parents. When she sits for the Conservatory entrance exam, she gets distracted by the strange behavior of Ariane, one of the jury members and a prominent pianist in her own right. Melanie fails. Years later, she becomes a trainee at a lawyer`s office and finds out her boss is Ariane`s husband ? the woman that changed Melanie`s life. La Tourneuse de pages, the fourth film by Denis Dercourt, who is also a musical artist, is a film about music ? as all of his previous films are. Juxtaposing the inner states of two women in different approaches, this psycho thriller superbly captures the delicate emotions flowing between the two. The film constantly makes us wonder how far this lady vengeance can go. (Rhee Soue-won)
