Program Note
Taesu, who works as a police investigator in Seoul, returns to his old home, with an obituary notice of his old friend, Wangjae. He meets up with his other friends, Pilho, Seokwhan and Dongwhan at the funeral rites. Taesu feels that Wangjae`s sudden death is suspicious and, along with Seokwhan, begins to investigate the murder case, delaying his return to Seoul. The dirty business named `development` is revealed and the two men start their final fight with the murders in their haunt. Ryoo Seung Wan tries to combine the action genre with social drama in his films, describing the joys and sorrows of outsiders in his feature debut. He continues this trial in [The City of Violence] and at the same time he uses interesting text to find a way out of the rules of Realism to the time and space of genre. This film reveals the falsehood of local development by corrupted Capitalism which he believes is actually the process of breaking up the local community. The film describes the action of two heroes to solve these problems through a mythical mise-en-scene. The audience can enjoy all of Ryoo Seung Wan, the `Action Kid,` in this excellent quotation of every action genre from the East and the West. (Huh Moon-yung)
