Program Note
1998 South Korea in anarchy of IMF. Ironically, drug traffic in Busan is flourishing. A drug broker, Sangdo, and an officer in charge of crimes of violence, police corporal Do, have different intentions but the same goal: removing `Jang-cheol, the kingpin of the drug business. At the risk of their lives, the two guys team up with each other. However, the identity of Jang-cheol remains mysterious, which drives these two men crazy. The action films of the 80`s by John WOO captivated young Korean film maniacs and affected deeply the Korean films made after the mid 90`s. Bloody Tie is not a simple imitation and homage to those films; it is a very interesting text which shows a new genre emerging by mixing the mythical actions of John WOO and the refined buddy movies of Hollywood in the social context of Korea. It is the most acclaimed film among the buddy movies of the year in South Korea with the two leading actor`s thrilling performances and the speedy and sensuous imagery of the film. (Huh Moon-yung)
