Upon receiving news of his mother`s illness, Soo-hyeon, a student at the Catholic Theological Seminary, rushes home. After a night there, he spends the next day visiting his ex-girlfriend, Su-a. Su-a is shocked by his visit and Soo-hyeon feels deeply guilty. He decides to drop out of the seminary but is persuaded by the head priest to go to a monastery. One day, Su-hyeon, who is slowly adjusting to his life in the monastery, runs into Helena, a nun-in-training at the cathedral, who bears a striking resemblance to Su-a. He faces a personal crisis of faith Unlike his two previous works, which portrayed the folk narratives in a small village in central Asia, Min Boung-hun, in his third work, examines the interior psyches of Korean teenagers. Even though a seminary student is his main character, [Pruning the Grapevine] doesn`t directly address the issue of religion. Rather, through minimal facial expressions and subtle gestures, he draws ? with reticence and dignity ? the struggles of a young soul caught between God and his own desires. In the quiet and sparse [Pruning the Grapevine], the main character`s craving for eternity is conveyed more powerfully through the empty and spiritless plains than it could through any language.
