Program Note
The President`s Last Bang redramatizes assassination of the President Park on Oct. 26th, 1979. Mr. Kim, the head of KCIA, hears about a little dinner party at Gung-Jeong dong held by the president, and he goes there with his secretary. Kim calls in Colonel Min and tells him to assassinate President Park. In this film, Im Sang-soo proves himself to be not only a critical realist but also an artist through his creative tone and style. Even in focusing on a key event from modern Korean history, Im focuses less on the cause-and-effect of these historical events or progressive politics than on the chain of events within which the characters are caught. A cynical and fatalistic tragicomedy. Following a court order to cut some scenes from the film, it was screened last year after 3 scenes ? amounting to three minutes and 50 seconds were cut out. This year, the full version of the film will be shown for the first time at PIFF after the new court ruling. (Huh Moon-yung)
