Program Note
This film is based on the true story of minister Bang Sung-bin, who helped look after streets orphans. Even though the film was initially censored for portraying the “impoverished lives of the colonized,” it went on to become the most celebrated Cho Sun film of the occupation. The film’s appeal lay in its carefully crafted storyline ? linking Bang’s ministry with the efforts of one brother and sister to find their family ? and the performances of the talented children, who appear innocent but never naive.
