Program Note
Volunteer was a propaganda film designed to promote Japan’s Cho Sun reserve army program. Chun-ho is a sincere young man who follows in his father’s footsteps by reclaiming wasteland and managing tenant farmers. While Deok-sam plots to take over his position, Chun-ho dreams of nothing more than sacrificing himself for the nation by joining the army and fighting in the war like a Japanese soldier. Watching the film, one can catch glimpses of Japan’s “One National Body” policy and the propaganda used to encourage land reclamation in order to boost rice production for the military.
