Program Note
After his older brother dies in the war, Sung-gi returns home. However, his father, who opposed Sung-gi’s marriage, rejects him. After much anguish, Sung-gi follows his brother to the war, leaving his impoverished wife to give birth to their baby alone. Sung-gi is injured during the war and his wife is dying of a disease, but nonetheless they reconcile across the Straits of Cho Sun. This propaganda film, which equates going to war with familial harmony and ultimate love, confirms the high craftsmanship of Korean films.

Ki Chae PARK
Born in Gwangju in 1906, Park Ki-chae started taking film classes after graduating from Doshisha University in Kyoto and started working at Dongakinema. He debuted as a film director in Japan with [Spring Elegy] and became active in South Korea after completing [Spring Breeze] in 1935. Once he began work at the Chosun Film Production Company, he directed talking films such as [I Will Go] and [Straits of Cho Sun]. He continued being active even after the country`s liberation, and immediately following the Korean War he was kidnapped, along with Choi In-Gyu, to North Korea. He directed eight films including [Heartlessness] (1935) and [The Sun of Night] (1948).
