Program Note
Ye-joon, a former activist, is on the fast track to upward mobility as a foreign exchange dealer. Ye-joon`s friend from the military, Jae-moon, is a sincere young man with a high school degree and a wife who works as a hairstylist; they are preparing to emigrate to the U.S. While Jae-moon`s wife is away on a business trip, Ye-joon accidentally drowns the couple`s newborn baby that he is taking care of. Jae-moon covers for his best friend and goes to prison while Ye-joon looks after his wife. Through a rather roundabout way, this film portrays the guilt and obsessiveness of the activist generation of the 1980s. Even after Ye-joon gives up his ideals and becomes a calculating realist, he is unable to abandon the language and gestures that legitimated his past self. Despite that language and those gestures, the situation worsens until he ultimately gets dragged to his grave. Even after chastising himself, life continues with a dark sense of premonition. The film is notable for dealing with everyday life with a dark and forbidding tone, its portrayal of an obsession without clear origins, and the mysterious final ending. (Huh Moon-yung)
