Program Note
A young city boy is sent to live with his 70-ish grandmother who lives deep in the mountains. Bored and disgusted of his mute grandmother and her unsanitary rural surroundings, he either treats the elderly woman with contempt or totally ignores her. But as time passes, a bond slowly develops between them. The film is poised on the opposites of country-city and older-younger, conflicts resolved through reconciliation and solidarity. The delicate arrangement of episodes and the amateur actors’ rather awkward performances gives a harmonious balance to the film. This film stormed the Korean box office early this year despite of its humble content matter, which was been considered unbankable by the mainstream film industry.
