Indian cinema brings to mind fantastic costumes and exciting song and dance. However, Arindam Mitra′s Zero Zone is far removed from such images. This film is a modern interpretation of Murder in the Cathederal, T.S. Elliot′s play about the assassination of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. Within a new setting and period, Zero Zone explores the themes of guilt and sacrifice with a sober tone. The man, a star cricket player and captain of his team, is charged with match fixing. In a moment of weakness, he had lost to temptation and now he wishes to admit to his guilt on all charges and accept the appropriate punishment. However, everybody tries to stop him - his loving family, his friends, the criminals who fixed the matches, and even his own self, manifested as a separate consciousness. He isolates himself from all his loved ones in order to confront his own transgressions. Through a dream-like narrative, Zero Zone follows the lonely path of inner struggle, and ultimately asks the viewers to reflect upon their own lives as well. (Kim Byeongcheol)
