After Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li, and Stephen Chow we are about to witness the arrival of a new icon from Hong Kong. My Life as McDull is an animation that bravely sets foot in a world dominated by Hello Kitty, Doraemon, Mickey Mouse, and Snoopy. It is about the adventures of McDull, a little pig from Hong Kong, and his mother McBing. McDull’s mother wishes for her son to succeed. But her son doesn’t seem to hold any special talent. But McDull gets by everyday as best he can. And like mother like son, so does McBing. Each episode in this animation portrays the rather earnest every day happenings of the mother and son. Witty gags and imagination give life to these stories and bring us closer to the ordinary lives of those living in Hong Kong. By freely using and twisting images from animations, films, and video games the overall impact of My Life… becomes stronger. Many of the images are associated with the regional flavor of Hong Kong, and may be hard to grasp for those outside of the territory. But take one episode for example McBing sends a letter of encouragement to McDull who tries to win a gold medal at the Olympics. This heart-warming episode is filled with universal messages such as the hopes and dreams of children, the love of parents, etc. Therefore, by the last scene, where the grown up McDull is talking to his mother, you will want more of McDull and his adventures, whether you’re from Hong Kong or not.
