Program Note
To all appearances this is a gangster film. However, this film narrates the human tragedy of a person who is a slave of his cruel fate and can never be freed of it. After spending 3 years locked up for his brother’s crime, Che returns to Nanfangao, his hometown, where nothing has really changed. Pei, his lover, is now an aphasic. Che’s father who left his wife and went off to Japan, has returned to Nanfangao and is stirring up trouble with the natives over territory. For Che, the only consolation is the old memories of his mother. Eventually Che decides to get out of this hell by turning himself into a demon. The native dwellers in the islands around Nanfangao believe the butterflies are the souls of demons. Che finds it ironic; to Che, who is both strong and weak, good and evil, the butterfly’s fragile beauty feels like the soul of his mother. Nanfangao, the land of natives, plays the perfect role as the background of this funereal tragedy. (KIM Ji-Seok)
