Program Note
Night Voyage is the outcome of the reunion of Kim Seung-oak’s screenplay, Yun Chung-hi and Shin Sung-Il’s acting, and Kim Soo-yong’s directing achieving the perfect harmony of 1967’s Mist. Hyun-joo, a bank teller, lives with her colleague, Park. Though satisfied himself, he offers her neither satisfaction nor marriage. Given a week off, Hyun-joo visits her hometown, where people are cynical about her long past innocent love for her teacher. She wanders around the streets at night, where men only desire for her body. Night Voyage interweaves the unfulfilled desire of Hyun-joo and the twisted desires toward her. The men tempted by her body never bring themselves to act out. Hyun-joo is also trapped in a net of desire. She constantly wants something, but does not know what that is. The film describes the sense of enervation and loss of direction of people who lived through the 70s, marching to the industrialization under the dictatorship, through the Hyun-joo? night voyage.
