Program Note
CMPC produced several blockbuster movies in the early 80s, and yet the box-office profit was poor. I proposed for four new directors to make a film, and I assured CMPC that it wouldn’t a big loss even if it failed. I asked Tao Decheng to present a proposal for the project and then Zhang Yi, who had been a scenario writer at CMPC, joined the project. We wanted two more directors from among TV directors, and they turned out to be Edward Yang and Ke Yizheng, who showed remarkable talent through 11 Women which had been produced by Sylvia Chang. Even after finishing In Our Time with its four episodes, nobody ever imagined such an ardent response among audiences. All four directors had an opportunity thanks to the success of the film. (Hsiao Yeh - producer of In Our Time)
