I entered the movie world in ’70s and got to know several directors who had studied abroad and returned in ’80s. I was stunned at the variety of camera techniques openly discussed by these directors. In terms of the Taiwanese New Wave, one of the most memorable moments for me centers around the formal black suits, which Central Motion Picture Corporation (CMPC) had made for us for our participation in Golden Horse Film Awards. After the Awards show, all of us went to Edward Yang’s house, took off the suits, and rolled about on Tatami just like a restaurant waitress coming back home from work. It was just an unforgettable experience. It’s certain that I would not have been a so-called internationally famous auteur but a great entertainment moviemaker if there had not been the Taiwanese New Wave cinema.
