Program Note
Shu-chen, a young upwardly mobile executive is at the centre of Taipei Story. People making emotional, social and financial demands of her surround her on all sides. Her father is hoping for her assistance with his own failing business ventures. Her long-time lover Ah Lung is old fashioned and emotionally bankrupt when he is around her. I learned some from audiences’ response after the finish of That Day, on the Beach, and yet I was still not interested in a film industry. For that reason, I wanted to explore how rich and creative the result could be when the circumstances of production were poor and restricted. I set it as a sort of challenge to myself. I never care about the popularity of my actor and actress. In addition, Yang Wei-han, the cinematographer and Wang Jie-jian, the lighting director merely had experience as assistants and their ability was not acknowledged at that time. The rest of staff, who just had one or two credits each in film production, were not so different from my own situation. With the beginning of shooting, I had to consider the actual conditions seriously, for we did not have enough money for a remote location. We had no other choice but to film in Taipei, the modern city, and it became the film about a story happening in Taipei. (Edward Yang)
