Program Note
Nymphomaniac is the wild and poetic story of a woman’s journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe. On a cold winter’s evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman, finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushy branched-out and multifaceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents. Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac Director’s Cut Vol. 1&2 is a five and a half hour psychological epic of a woman who has a sexual compulsion. Nymphomaniac shocked the people and created lots of controversy and buzz when volume 1 and 2 was premiered at Berlin and Venice separately. And together, it will do it again here in Busan at Midnight Passion.

Lars von TRIER
Copenhagen native Lars Von Trier is perhaps known as well for his Dogme 95 manifesto as for his polemic filmmaking. A graduate of the National Film School of Denmark, he has been pushing the boundaries of cinema for over two decades. His filmography includes Europa(1991), Breaking the Waves(1996), The Idiots(1998), The Palmer d’Or-winning Dancer in the Dark(2000), and two parts of his intended America Trilogy, Dogville(2003), and Manderlay(2005), The Boss of It All(2006), Antichrist(2009), and Melancholia(2011).
