Over Your Dead Body is the latest of director Miike Takashi’s signature horror movies. Kosuke is cast in a theatrical play adapted from Japan’s classic ghost tale Yotsuya Kaidan, a play about betrayal, vengeance and murder. He plays the role of Iyemon, who, blinded by selfish ambitions, betrays his wife Oiwa in an act that leads to her death. Oiwa is played by his girlfriend, Miyuki. However, as they prepare for the performance, Kosuke cheats on Miyuki with a younger actress, Rio, leading Miyuki to seek brutal revenge. As the film continuous in a horrid parallel between the story of the play and reality, Miike puts his focus on how best he can portray those parallel realms. Taking advantage of the theatrical stage to create a visually dynamic and shocking horror atmosphere beyond imagination, the characters all meet a tragic, stomach-churning end. (KIM Ji-seok)
