Program Note
[Return to Burma] captures the realities of Myanmar, a country that has been closed to outsiders for a great deal of time. It is a project made possible only by Chinese-Burmese director Midi Z, though he currently resides in Taiwan. Wang Xing-hong, an immigrant laborer in Taiwan, is able to save enough money to return home. It’s an unhappy return, as he is bringing the remains of his friend Rong with him, who died in an accident. Once he arrives he sets out to try and find work. Though he’s been gone for a long time, things don’t appear to have changed much. Most of the young want to work abroad?in China, Malaysia, Dubai, or Taiwan?and prostitution and drug trafficking are still prevalent. Director Midi Z overcame the obstacles and difficulties of shooting a film in Myanmar, and as a result is able to show us the unrefined current state of Burma. It is not difficult to understand why the director has decided to name the film [Return to Burma] rather than Return to Myanmar. (KIM Ji-seok)
