Program Note
Fred and Jurek are brothers. Their father always advises them to cooperate but the brothers who run a business together are always in discord like Cain and Abel, each insisting on his own position. On a train ride, the brothers witness a young woman getting sexually harassed. When Jurek tries to help her, he is attacked by the teenagers and falls out of the train. Fred, who is more reserved than Jurek, is denounced by the family and friends for having just stood by and watched Jurek’s accident. Fred, also, becomes consumed with guilt. Playing a variation on the Cain and Abel story, [Courage] deals with the subtle discord and the sense of guilt existing between the two brothers. Fred musters up the courage and starts to look for the criminals who beat up his brother. The process becomes one of atonement and at the same time it touches on the moral theme of restoring humanity. Not only does the film show the delicateness of a psychological drama but it is also our own portrait. (LEE Sang-yong)
