Program Note
2007 APM(aka. PPP) Project This Armenian film begins with a line from the Trial of Joan of Arc. “How long has it been since you heard your voices?” “I heard them yesterday and today” The film deals with the journey of Joan, who finds her voice. Just like Joan of Arc who heard God’s voice, an Armenian girl, Joan, all grown up, travels through the ruins of the long civil war. It is a journey in retrospect of her past and series of encounters with survivors of wound of history. Towards the end, stories of the people she met are introduced back to back. Heavy silence of the film is broken by these voices and they seem to mend the wounds in place of the optimistic view on life. [Joan and the Voices] displays the three sides of the trinity overseeing the past, present, and the possible future in a poetic inspiration. (LEE Sang-yong)
