Program Note
As the title, [The Odds], suggests, this film is about gambling. At night, high school students who make bets at the basketball court, gather together in one house. A small gambling game is held every night at this house. Gambler Desson enjoys a night out gambling with his new girlfriend. Then, he witnesses the death of his close friend Barry who appears to have hanged himself. The incident is settled as a suicide. Desson embarks on an investigation of his friends to find the truth behind Barry’s death. This startling film reveals the desires and confusions experienced by teenagers hidden behind the seemingly orderly rules of gambling. The teen gamblers secretly play for real at the gambling rooms only for adults and, at times, they argue over money. Ultimately, The Odds is a film both about ‘world order’ and about teenage rites of passage. By indulging in the adult gambling world, the teenagers go through the dark initiation process entering into a world of violence and deals. (LEE Sang-yong)
