Program Note
3 years since [Dream], Kim Ki-duk presented another self docudrama [Arirang] and received the spotlight winning the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes Film Festival 2011. His undying energy brought him to a few European cities and completed yet another new film. [AMEN] is a road movie about a woman in her 20s who flies to Paris in search of her boyfriend she cannot reach. Out of respect for the director’s mysterious creativity, it is better not to mention any incidents our heroin encounters on the road. To Kim Ki-duk, either or not she finds her boyfriend is of little importance. It is certainly the process that matters, not the result. The director just follows her every step of the way in the standard 4:3 screen size with hand-held camera himself. There is no effect or tricky movement and lack of them comes up as an attraction. With very little dialogue spoken, she only screams the name Lee Myoung-soo. [AMEN] is the road movie version of [3-Iron] and International version of the [Bad Guy]. There is no question of the director’s integrity to his film world. (JEON Chanil)
