Program Note
Director Hong Sang-soo’s twelfth feature depicts a brief visit to Seoul by Sung-joon(Yu Jun-sang), a film director with four feature film credit and professor of some university of Daegu. The Professor attempts to see his senior(Kim Sang-joong) but he is unavailable. He runs into a small time actress he’s known. Then he joins the table of film students at a bar to cause quite a happening. He finally gets wasted and spends a night at his ex-girlfriend’s. This brief summary of the film might be appealing already. The absurd catharsis and thrill one gets out of listening to the dialogues in the film is an astonishing sensation that leaves us in awe of the director. The director’s unique way with repetition and variation produces such details and the realistic performances of the casts double the pleasantry. Still the most interesting part is the intentional displacement of time. Episodes happening in the same space yet it is hard to tell if those incidents are time-lined or independent, or circulating. We cannot rule out the possibility of them being both cases. This ironic deduction highlights the fascinating riddles of the film. (JEON Chanil)
