Program Note
Jozef travels from Poland to France to work and to find his son Roman, who he abandoned 15 years earlier. Jozef works for a Polish immigrant family that has successfully settled in France. Rose, the family’s teenaged daughter, volunteers to help him find his son. Roman happens to go to the same school as Rose, and she finds him attractive. After an unexpectedly wonderful experience with Roman, she falls desperately in love with him. This film uses adolescence to focus on relationships, both between a father and his children, and between the sexes. Relationships that rule the teenaged characters’ lives are fraught with identity issues and sexual desire. These Polish immigrants look to their roots, expressed through the use of their language and Rose—the lead character—displays her sexual desires through her looks and behavior, but her love is quite impure; laced more with cruelty and sneakiness than romantic innocence. This new director’s courage in tackling adolescent anxiety and desire head on and not beautifying them is worthy of notice. (RHEE Soue-won)
