One time Les Cahiers du Cinéma contributor Leos Carax’s ability to bend and sometimes break film conventions while paying homage to them showed early in his career. In Bad Blood, rebellious teen Alex works with his dead father’s cohorts to steal a cure for STBO, an AIDS-like disease spread by emotion-free sex. Like Carax’s film Holy Motors, the film is as concerned with form as it is with content. Set in a future Paris, this romantic thriller pivoting on ideas of youthful love and loneliness is an exhilarating exercise in color, composition and purely visual filmmaking.
