Program Note
The documentary shows people working in the amber mines, deep in the forests of Myanmar. The region is ruled by Kachin Independence Army in Myanmar. Most residents dig the ground, hoping to escape from poverty by finding expensive fossil amber. Miners want to become the owners of the mine, and the current owner wants to return to his hometown. However, the excessive mining prevents them from finding substantial amounts of amber, and lack of water makes the working conditions hard. Furthermore, the fear of being attacked by soldiers makes their life harder. One night, with the sound of gunshots, their fear becomes real. The director stays with them, recording their hard life instead of digging for political issues or focusing on the conflicts. This movie doesn’t make any intentional efforts to keep a distance from the miners. Rather, it just worries about them, feeling sorry for their life that doesn’t have a wide range of choices. What the director can do is record them, so that their life may continue on. (CHO Hyeyoung)
