Program Note
If Pororo is Korean children’s friend, there’s a kitchen elf Circleen for Danish children. Created in 1967 as heroine of a short animation by Jannik Hastrup, grand master of Danish animation, Circleen has since been much loved over the past 50 years as a TV animation series and theatrical films. Circleen, Coco and the Wild Rhinoceros is the latest in the Circleen series, and was first introduced in 2018 at the Berlin International Film Festival. Princess Coco jumps out of a box of chocolate in the kitchen and wants to return to chocolate land, where chocolate grows on trees. Next to the box of chocolate is a cracker box, out of which jumps a little rhinoceros who lost his mom. Mesmerized by Princess Coco’s brown skin color, Circleen decides to follow them on their adventure. But chocolate growing trees and mother rhinoceros are nowhere to be found. Instead, they find a lonely rhinoceros and villainous rats who steal chocolate from families of mice. It is a lovely tale for preschoolers. (Huh Kyoung)
