The film begins with a historical trial in 1963. Nelson Mandela and his colleagues were sentenced to life imprisonment in a nine-month trial made famous by Mandela’s self-defense speech. Instead of showing images from this time period, the film moves back and forth between past and present, picturing the democratizing of South Africa using 256 hours of audio records. The film interviews the people on trial and their families using the trial recordings to calmly clarify the past in the present, or perhaps the present through the past. The 50-year difference is visualized through animation, archival records and current survivors. But the real power of the film is not in the heroism of the warriors who made history or the official records against apartheid. It is the revelation of the other side of the lives of those who survived for their beliefs from various angles and perspectives, theirs and their families. Freedom, conviction, human rights, love, responsibility—these beliefs that go hand in hand with one another are layered together in history and in the individual. (Lee Seungmin)
