Program Note
In a small town on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands during one scorching summer, eight teenagers are bored to death. After pulling pranks on one another, they crave more excitement. The teenagers, full of sexual curiosity, begin a dangerous game. The childish pranks soon escalate into criminal behavior, including prostitution, blackmail, extortion, and violence. Rene Eller’s debut film We takes a closer look at teenage crime, which has been escalating all over the world, but is not interested in analyzing the characters or uncovering the reason for their truancy. Reasons that often appear in news reports, such as dysfunctional family lives or child abuse, have no place in this film. Neither do normative or legal interpretations. There are only the attitudes and feelings of the teenagers who commit crimes without any hesitation, and the unique dynamics and rhythm of the moments when simple pranks evolve into horrible crimes. There, beyond their inexplicable actions, we find a moment to reflect our own selves and surroundings. (Jin Park)
