Program Note
Ten Years Japan succeeds the famous Ten Years produced in 2015 in Hong Kong as part of the Ten Years International Project to premiere in Busan. Executive produced by one of the most renowned directors working today, Kore-eda Hirokazu, the film consists of five short films directed by young and talented directors with bold insights and featuring outstanding actors of different ages. The dystopian future marked by issues of poverty among the elderly, euthanasia, artificial intelligence, fully controlled education, digital heritage, the right to know, radioactive contamination and militarization, are not new today at all, and seem to be getting worse and worse. Subsequently, the film unpleasantly alarms us with frightening messages and limited hopefulness. The lower budget was utilized at its best to simulate higher production value, and the speedy, short film narratives’ ability to stimulate tension is impressive. (Park Sungho)
