Program Note
A Japanese-American director, who’s living in Japan and has been speaking about various issues of Japanese society through YouTube, became interested in the ‘comfort women’ issue. The ‘comfort women’ victims, Japanese government ignoring the responsibility, the civic groups supporting the victims in Korea and in US, the Americans singing the same tune with the Japanese right wing, and the ‘comfort women’ agreement between Park Geun-hye and Abe Shinzo in 2015… The director wants to dig the situation deeper surrounding the ‘comfort women’ issue. Shusenjo: The Main Battleground of Comfort Women Issue is a documentary showing the positions on both sides of the activists, as well as the ordinary citizens in South Korea, Japan, the United States, with meticulously examined footages and wide ranges of interviews with many people. A sense of urgency and tact in editing catch our eyes. It is a work that maintains objectivity with maximum effort, but has a clear conclusion. We need to pay attention to this film. (Huh Kyoung)
