Program Note
Four-year-old Kun is delighted to have a new baby sister, Mirai. But he is soon devastated when he sees that his parents are so taken with her that they have no more love left for him. Then one day in his backyard, he meets a girl who introduces herself as Mirai and they embark on a journey to the past, where they meet their mother and great-grandfather. He slowly begins to understand his family and show them love. It’s lovely to see Kun’s parents learning and growing alongside Kun. Japanese director Hosoda Mamoru, who has a good fan base in Korea as well, returns three years after The Boy and the Beast. It is his first time-travel film in 12 years, when The Girl Who Leapt Through Time put him on the map, making him famous in 2006. Though box office records in Japan haven’t hit the phenomenal level of his previous works, they still prove his powerful popularity. (Huh Kyoung)
