Doichi in his 40s is a boatman who is transporting villagers to towns beyond the river. While working all day ferrying the villagers, Doichi only talks to Kenzo, a young neighbor. A bridge is being built on the upper reaches of the river, and villagers are excited about a new life that will make a big difference after the bridge is completed, but Doichi is confused by the idea that his livelihood will disappear. One day, he bumps into a girl whose whole family was murdered and survived alone, and helps her stay in his place. Meeting this girl completely changes Doichi’s life.
"There are many things that are disappearing behind the development of civilization. The more comfortable the world is, the less tradition and beautiful culture we need.
