Although ‘Agnes’ is in the title, the real main character of the movie is Agnes’ mother, Rannveig. A middle-aged woman, Rannveig, is not satisfied with her current life. Her daughter Agnes does not listen to her very well and her husband is nice but has no sexual interest in her. The problem gets complicated as a new neighbor emerges. A well-known actor who appeared in a TV drama moves to a neighbor’s house, and both the mother and the daughter become interested in him. Eventually, Rannveig’s family faces an unexpected crisis.
Many movies deal with family cracks and reconciliation, but Agnes Joy gives a special look at a middle-aged woman’s sex and desire. In other movies, Rannveig would be criticized easily, but Agnes Joy looks at her with affection. The warm gaze of understanding Rannveig’s position leads to the mature attitude of her husband.
