Program Note
For children, a camera can be a toy. The Day My Aunt Was Ill was initiated as a children′s play but was completed as a film with the help of their father and brother. Despite its title, the film does not involve the aunt′s illness, but only reflect a story about children playing with a camera on the day their aunt was absent due to illness. Hana decides to make a film and discusses with her cousins and friends their roles, but everyone wants to take a good part. In short, it is a children′s version of Mohsen Makhmalbaf′s Salaam Cinema. With the participation of grandfather, father, and brother in this playful filmmaking of Hana and other children, the film offers the feeling of their care and adoration for their children.
