Program Note
A SADC Prize winner at the 74th Cannes Directors’ Fortnight Magnetic Beats is the story about the fate of two brothers living in the French countryside during the early ’80s. Both are deep into the New Wave music, bearing with the boring country life through the rhythm of Joy Division, Iggy Pop, and Throbbing Gristle. Charismatic older brother Jérôme not only leads the pirate radio station but also is in a relationship with the attractive girl Marianne. His timid and introverted brother Philippe, who yet has a natural-born talent in sound-mixing, is secretly in love with Marianne. The day when Philippe gets conscripted leads to a big change for the two brothers. In his debut feature, Vincent Maël Cardona impressively depicts the late ’70s ′no future′ generation, who is similar to the modern young generation, through felicitously arranging rock music, humour, emotions, archiving sources, political issues, and classical yet modernised shots.
