Program Note
The plot of Titane is surprisingly simple: A woman, who has had a titanium plate planted in her head, following a car accident when she was a child, is suddenly seized with strange desires, and thus, becomes involved in a series of unusual and alarming incidents. One day, she meets a father who is searching for the son lost ten years ago. Titane blends elements of horror, SF, thriller, romance; it is certainly an unprecedented film. More noteworthy, even than the outstanding scenario, is Julia Ducournau′s unique cinematographic style. The film might best be called an opera of steel, blood, and flame. In her now famous acceptance speech upon winning the Palme d′Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, Ducournau remarked, "Monstrous nature is a weapon and a force that pushes away the wall of norms. Thank you for letting the monsters in." (SEO Seunghee)

Director
Julia DUCOURNAU
Born in 1983 in France, Julia Ducournau is a film director and screenwriter who graduated from La Fémis. She gained attention in 2011 when her short film Junior (2011) was selected at the Critics′ Week in Cannes 2011. Her first feature Raw (2016), a story of a young girl from a vegetarian family, who is craving for flesh, created a shock wave when it won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. With Titane, Ducournau became the second female director to win the Palme d′Or after Jane Campion, which is an unusual event for a new director to win in the history of the Cannes Film Festival.
