Program Note
Great Freedom asks if love and freedom can exist in incarceration. It follows a journey of a man imprisoned for nearly twenty-years (from 1945 to 1969) for being a homosexual. It is a political movie that deals with the oppression against homosexuality and, at the same time, a love story between Hans and his cell mate Viktor, a prisoner serving a life sentence. Director Sebastian Meise′s latest film resembles works by Rainer Werner Fassbinder or Rosa Von Praunheim. Its strong opening sequence and the scenes shot in the back room of a gay club conjure up the eras in which they are set. Lead actor Franz Rogowski, who showed impressive performance in Transit (2018) and Undine (2020) both by Christian Petzold, makes the movie true to life. Great Freedom was awarded Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at this year′s Cannes Film Festival. (SEO Seunghee)
